July 11, 2016 — “We commend the House for the passage of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA). This is a historic moment for our country, bringing us closer than ever before to turning the tide on this public health crisis. We now strongly encourage the Senate to quickly pass the legislation and send it to the President in order to begin to implement important polices that can have an immediate effect on preventing and treating opioid misuse, addiction and overdose and supporting people in recovery.  The cost of the opioid epidemic is too high to continue without real legislative solutions; every day that we put this off we leave hundreds of thousands without treatment and put thousands of lives at risk.  We look forward to working with federal, state and local elected officials and policy makers to enact this legislation.
We are disappointed that appropriate funding was not included to maximize the potential of this legislation, which was designed to meaningfully address the opioid crisis but will fall short without more funding. We are fully committed and prepared to work with Congress this year to get money appropriated to ensure that communities in desperate need of support can better address the opioid crisis.”
